Edit 26: Shūchū
I recently read that certain Japanese words are tied to your birth month. For mine—February—one stood out from the rest.
Shūchū.
It means deep focus. Narrowing the world to one priority and protecting it, letting everything else fall away.
When I read it, I felt an immediate connection—a confirmation of something I had already been practicing: choosing what’s real in this in-between time of life and allowing my attention to settle there.
Life, Edited was born from this space—the miles between what has been and what is becoming. It’s not an ending, not a beginning, just the middle. And in the middle, focus matters.
So much of this season has been about less, not more. A steadier pace. A smaller field of vision. The quiet confidence that comes from knowing exactly where to look.
Lately, that has meant picking up my camera with intention—focusing on light and shadow, on faces I love, on the discipline of seeing well. I’m not chasing everything, but committing to what’s in front of me. It’s editing in the truest sense.
Shūchū reminds me to honor the time of life I’m in—the person I am becoming. Discovering this word while celebrating my birthday, however, felt like alignment. A natural continuation of a conversation I’ve been having with myself for quite some time.
So if this is the word tied to my birth month, it feels right.
The view is clear. It’s focused. And from where I stand, it is fantastic.
Is there a word that names where you are right now? I'd love to know.
